What Is Paraffin Wax?
Paraffin wax is a byproduct of petroleum refining. It's produced when crude oil is processed into fuels and lubricants — the waxy residue left behind gets purified and sold as candle wax.
It has dominated the candle industry for over a century because it's cheap, abundant, and easy to work with at scale. The majority of commercially produced candles — including most "aromatherapy" and "luxury" candles at mass-market prices — are made with paraffin.
What Is Soy Wax?
Soy wax is derived from hydrogenated soybean oil. It was developed in the 1990s as a renewable, plant-based alternative to paraffin. Soybeans are grown domestically in the United States, making soy wax a product that supports American agriculture rather than petroleum extraction.
It's softer than paraffin, burns at a lower temperature, and requires more careful handling — which is why it's more common in small-batch and artisan candles than in mass production.

Burn Time
Soy wax burns cooler and slower than paraffin. A soy candle will typically outlast a paraffin candle of the same size by 25–50%. Our 16oz soy candles are rated for up to 80 hours — a paraffin candle of the same weight would burn significantly faster.
Soot and Air Quality
This is the most significant practical difference.
Paraffin candles produce black soot — the carbon residue that blackens jar rims, walls, and ceilings over time. More importantly, burning paraffin releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including benzene and toluene — the same compound families found in diesel exhaust. Studies have noted that frequent burning of paraffin candles in enclosed spaces contributes measurable VOC levels to indoor air.
Soy wax is chemically inert when burned. It produces minimal soot and does not release petroleum-based compounds. The air in a room after burning a soy candle is meaningfully cleaner than after burning paraffin.
Scent Throw
Soy wax holds fragrance oil differently than paraffin. Because it melts at a lower temperature, it creates a larger melt pool that releases fragrance more gradually and more evenly throughout the room. Paraffin burns hotter, which can volatilize fragrance faster — producing a strong initial hit that fades more quickly.
For lasting, consistent scent throw over the life of the candle, soy performs better.
Cleanup
Spilled soy wax cleans up with warm water and soap. Spilled paraffin requires solvents or significant scraping. If you've ever gotten candle wax on fabric, soy is far easier to deal with.
The "Soy Blend" Problem
Here's something that trips up a lot of buyers: a candle labeled "soy" is not required to be 100% soy. U.S. labeling standards don't require full disclosure of wax composition on candles.
Many brands use soy-paraffin blends — sometimes as much as 70% paraffin — and market them as "soy candles" or "made with soy wax." You get the marketing benefit without the actual performance of a pure soy candle.
If the label says "100% soy wax," that's meaningful. If it just says "soy wax" or "made with soy," it could be anything from 10% to 100% soy.
Is Paraffin Wax Toxic?
Burning a paraffin candle occasionally in a well-ventilated space is not acutely dangerous for healthy adults. The concern is cumulative exposure — regular use in enclosed rooms, especially with poor air circulation.
For people with respiratory sensitivities, asthma, or small children and pets in the home, the soot and VOC output from paraffin becomes more significant. The same caution applies to anyone burning candles daily as part of a home routine.
Soy wax is a substantially cleaner choice for frequent, regular use.
